KEEP MISSISSIPPI BEAUTIFUL!
A program led by the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department is using inmates to help remove litter from the county’s roadways and other public places. The Sheriff’s Department partnered with Keep Mississippi Beautiful and the Mississippi Department of Transportation to expand the program, which included the donation of a trailer from Keep Mississippi Beautiful.
So far in 2017, it is estimated this program has removed 26,688 pounds of litter from Tishomingo County roadways.
“We commend Sheriff John Daugherty and the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department for their efforts to remove litter from county roadways,” said Sarah Kountouris, Keep Mississippi Beautiful executive director. “Each spring, Keep Mississippi Beautiful and groups like the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department join together for the Great American Cleanup, a nationwide effort to pick up litter and make community improvements. By preventing and cleaning up litter, we can work together to boost community pride, local economies and the quality of life across Mississippi.”
The Sheriff’s Department has used inmates to pick up litter for the past few years.
“We reintroduced this litter program back to the county when my administration took office. It has been a great asset to the beautification of the state highways and we will continue to keep the program in place as the resources are available”..
